About the Mess

Me in 2009 with baby Graham and red hair.

Hi. I’m Jess and this is my blog.

My Story

I’m Jessica Woodbury (you may have met me as Jessica Severson): a procrastinator, a single mom, a lapsed lawyer, an Autism Mom, a devoted reader, a penny pincher, a working parent, a new New England-er, a low-key agnostic, a top-notch speller, a hardcore blogger, a divorcee, and a Twitter fiend. Through it all I remain a nice-ish girl with a big mouth.

I married E in 2007, in 2013 we separated, and divorced in 2014. We had a couple of happy years, but mostly rough ones. We have joint custody. It’s rarely easy.

My indomitable son Graham is 5.  He often goes by Bug or some variation thereof. Graham has always been a tough kid and he was finally diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum in February, 2011. After a couple years of therapy he matriculated into the school system and is currently on an IEP, in Kindergarten and as happy as a clam.

In February, 2012 Tessa was born. A mellow baby for a long while, she also got an Autism diagnosis in 2014. She is more mild than Graham and her autism mostly sticks out when it comes to eye contact and communication.

We’ve lived in Boston since 2010. I’ve done all kinds of work, from lawyering to teachering, and last year I forayed my work on the blog and in social media into a full time gig making me a for-real working-out-of-the-home single parent.

My Blogging Philosophy

Honesty is my main policy. There are very few things I won’t talk about. (I make exceptions. Like poop.) I easily admit my weaknesses and flaws. And I love for my readers to share openly with me.

Please comment, I’d love to get to know you better! But be aware comments are moderated. Please exercise the same good manners here that you would anywhere else.

I have a full-disclosure policy when it comes to ads and compensation. I prefer to work with brands that are in my real-life price range. So you’ll always know I’m behind what I say and who I say it about. I promise you to be totally honest in any and all reviews.

If you’re interested in advertising on the site or if you’re a brand looking for a partnership, please go to my PR page or hit the contact me button.
