About the Mess

IMG 1133.v2 225x300 About the MessHi. I’m Jess and I am a blogaholic.

(Hi, Jess.)

I keep this personal-slash-parenting-slash-lifestyle blog. I curate a book review site at Red Letter Reads

I do freelance writing on a variety of topics, including law and science. I speak about blogging, social media, book reviewing and legal issues.

My Story

I’m Jessica Woodbury (formerly Severson): a procrastinator, a former at-home mom who is suddenly working again, a lapsed lawyer, an Autism Mom, a devoted reader, a penny pincher, a new New England-er, a low-key agnostic, a top-notch speller, a hardcore blogger and a Twitter fiend. Through it all I remain a nice girl with a big mouth.

I married E in 2007 and in 2013 we separated and divorced in 2014. We had a couple of happy years, but mostly rough ones.

Our indomitable son Graham turns 4 in July, 2013.  He often goes by Bug or some variation thereof. Graham has always been a tough kid and he was finally diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum in February, 2011. After a couple years of therapy he matriculated into the school system and is currently on an IEP and about to start Kindergarten.

In February, 2012 baby Tessa was born, aka Tesser. A mellow baby for a long while, she also got an Autism diagnosis in 2014. She is more mild than Graham and her autism mostly sticks out when it comes to eye contact and communication.

We’ve lived in the Boston area since 2010. I’ve done all kinds of work, from lawyering to teachering, and I currently forayed my work on the blog and in social media into a full time gig.

My Blogging Philosophy

Honesty is my main policy. There are very few things I won’t talk about. (But I have a strict no-poop-discussion policy.) I easily admit my weaknesses and flaws. And I love for my readers to share openly with me.

Please comment, I’d love to get to know you better! But be aware comments are moderated. Please exercise the same good manners here that you would anywhere else.

I have a full-disclosure policy when it comes to ads and compensation. I prefer to work with brands that are in my real-life price range. So you’ll always know I’m behind what I say and who I say it about. I promise you to be totally honest in any and all reviews.

If you’re interested in advertising on the site or if you’re a brand looking for a partnership, please go to my PR page or hit the contact me button.

I do a book post on Fridays, which includes book reviews, giveaways, author Q&A’s, etc. I am active on Netgalley and Edelweiss. If there is a book you’re interested in passing along to me, please contact me via email or Twitter. You can see some of my book content on my Reading Page.
